Rohrbacher’s Trio of Home Runs Leads Bears to Series Win

HOW IT HAPPENED
After Ryan Lobus and the Mercer defense retired the side in the top of the first, Jozsef Rohrbacher started the home run fest for the Bears. Antonio Brown reached on a single, and Eric Toth was walked, allowing Rohrbacher to hit his first three-run homer of the day to open the scoring.
UNCG tied it up immediately in the top of the second with an RBI single and a two-run home run, but the reprieve did not last long for the Spartans.
Mercer logged a six-run outing in the bottom of the second while batting around the order. Ty Dalley opened the inning with a shot off the batter's eye in center field to retake the lead, 4-3. After starting pitcher Caleb Cozart allowed two runners on base, the Spartans brought in Price King in relief, but the Bears scored the next five runs with two outs on the board.
Toth singled to send Treyson Hughes home next. Carter Sanford stepped up to the plate and hit a single that troubled the Spartans. A throw by first baseman GC Jarman to an unguarded first base allowed Sanford to advance to second and A. Brown to cross home plate. To cap off the inning, Rohrbacher hit his second three-run homer of the game in as many at-bats to plate Toth and Sanford.
The Spartans got two back in the top of the third with a home run by Dosi Jonas, but the Bears negated this in the bottom of the third. Hughes hit his 10th home run of the season to score two more for Mercer.
Lobus recorded his seventh strikeout of the day in the top of the fifth, but a three-run home run triggered a pitching change for the Bears. Fred Wilson entered in relief, and Mercer caught Bradley Bott stealing for the final out of the inning. Wilson struck out two in the top of the sixth to notch a scoreless inning.
Rohrbacher stole the show with his third home run of the game and fourth of the weekend, adding two more to his RBI count of eight on Sunday. Eight RBI are a career record for Rohrbacher.
In the bottom of the seventh, Jackson Cherry reached on a hit by pitch and was replaced by pinch runner Conner Todaro. Hughes launched a double down the right field line, advancing Todaro to third, allowing him to run home on a wild pitch. UNCG matched this with another run scored in the top of the eighth on a ground out, making the score 14-9 in favor of Mercer.
Jess Ackerman closed out the game by striking out the final two Spartan batters to seal the win. Wilson was the pitcher of record, earning his first win of the season.
"This is a big win. We're tied for first right now, we got our two biggest series coming up. We're excited get after it."
