TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Mercer baseball program (28-19) dropped the second game of the series to Florida State (17-28), 9-0, on Saturday at Dick Howser Stadium. FSU starting pitcher Conner Whittaker faced just 29 batters, striking out seven, in eight innings pitched to keep the Bears off the board.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears opened the game with a pair of singles by Treyson Hughes and Antonio Brown, but both runners were left stranded. After keeping the Seminoles scoreless in the first, a triple by DeAmez Ross scored two in the second to put Florida State in the lead.
FSU strung together two singles and two walks to score in another run in the third. A second triple and a sacrifice foul out in the fourth extended FSU's lead to six.
Wesley Franklin entered on the bump and struck out three in the fifth and sixth to post two scoreless frames. Micah Takac and the Mercer defense retired the side in the seventh, featuring a stellar diving catch by Hughes in center field. Florida State capped off the scoring with a three-run homer in the eighth.
