
HERO Sports Ranks Mercer No. 19 In Preseason Top 25

Bears one of three SoCon teams ranked in Top 25
MACON, Ga. – HERO Sports recently released its 2023 FCS Preseason Top 25 Poll and coming in at No. 19 was the Mercer Bears. The Bears are one of three SoCon teams along with Furman (No. 5) and Samford (No. 8) to be ranked in the poll.
This is the second preseason ranking the Bears have received from notable FCS football media outlets, as Athlon Sports ranked Mercer at No. 17 in its preseason top 25.
Mercer started last season ranked No. 23 in the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll, it's first ever preseason ranking in program history. The Bears got off to a 6-1 start and received its highest ranking in program history at No. 11 in the poll.
The Bears finished the year with the No. 1 scoring offense in the SoCon, averaging 38.2 points per game. On the other side of the ball, the Mercer defense led the FCS during the regular season with 17 interceptions.
Mercer had 12 players named to the All-Conference teams last season, including returning wide receiver Devron Harper who was named the first AP All-American in school history.
Mercer led the Southern Conference in home game attendance last season with an average of 10,605 fans.Â
