GREENVILLE, S.C. – Good news came in bunches for the 20th-ranked Mercer football team on Thursday at the annual Southern Conference Media Days as a dozen Bears were lauded with preseason all-conference accolades, including six first-team selections.
Â
Wide receivers Ty James and Devron Harper joined offensive lineman John Thomas on the first team offensive squad, while defensive lineman Solomon Zubairu and linebacker Isaac Dowling were first team selections for the Orange & Black on the defensive side of the ball. Harper also logged an additional first-team nod as a return specialist.
Â
Lineman Israel Mukwiza was the lone offensive selection for Mercer on the second team offense, while five Bears – lineman Savio Frazier, linebacker Ken Standley and defensive backs Richie Coffey, Myles Redding and Lance Wise – were all crowned as second team defensive picks.
Â
Fresh from registering one of its finest seasons in the 10-year modern day era of the program, Mercer was picked to finish third in both the Southern Conference Preseason Coaches and Media Polls. Furman and Samford occupied the Nos. 1 and 2 spots in both listings, while the Bears raked in a pair of first-place votes in the media poll.
Â
Mercer will lift the lid on its 2023 schedule on August 26 when the Bears travel to Montgomery, Ala., to take on North Alabama in the FCS Kickoff Classic. Start time has been slated for 3:30 p.m. ET at the historic Cramton Bowl, and tickets for the event can be purchased by visiting MercerBears.com/FCSKickoff.
