CLEVELAND – Dedication to his role as a student-athlete was on full display on Sunday morning when junior linebacker Ken Standley was among 52 players nationwide named to the 26th Annual Academic All-Star Team, the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) announced.
Â
Football players from all Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) institutions are eligible for the award. Each of the nominees were required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate or graduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials.
Â
Nominees must also have reached their second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have completed a minimum of one full academic year at the nominated institution. They also must have participated in 50 percent of the games played at their designated position.
Â
Standley, who maintained a 3.454 cumulative grade point average on the way to earning his bachelor's degree in August, currently sports a perfect 4.0 GPA while pursuing his master's degree in business administration (MBA) at Mercer.
Â
On the field, the Waycross product was just as impressive. The first-team All-Southern Conference and all-America selection started in all 13 games for the Orange & Black this season, and logged a team-leading 97 tackles (51 solo), including 15.0 tackles for loss (-46 yards) and 4.0 sacks (-22 yards). He also added nine quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and three pass break-ups, and broke through with his first two career interceptions, including one that he returned for a score in Mercer's road win over The Citadel. Standley turned in seven or more tackles nine times in 2023, including nine stops on four occasions.
