SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A record-breaking performance in the secondary in Saturday's win over visiting Princeton was enough to land senior TJ Moore back in familiar territory on Monday afternoon when he was crowned as Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced.
Moore, an everyday starter at cornerback for the No. 7 Bears (6-0, 3-0 SoCon), registered a school record-breaking three interceptions to help lead the Orange & Black to a convincing 34-7 home win over Princeton on Saturday at Five Star Stadium. He also logged an assisted tackle in the third period. His three interceptions comprised half of the six turnovers forced by Mercer in the victory.
Saturday's performance slid Moore into sole possession of second place among the program's all-time interception leaders. With nine career pickoffs, the Riverdale native trails former MU all-American Lance Wise (2019-23) by just a pair of interceptions on that chart.
His five interceptions also matches the program's single-season mark set by Wise last season.
Mercer is back on the road again on Saturday when it heads to Birmingham, Ala., to take on SoCon rival Samford (2-3, 1-1) in a 3 p.m. ET kickoff at Pete Hanna Stadium. Tickets for the game are still available, and can be purchased by visiting SamfordTickets.com.
