MACON – Athletics department officials from Mercer University announced their condolences on Tuesday afternoon for the family, friends and former teammates of former standout offensive lineman Andrew Robinson who passed away unexpectedly on Sunday. He was 25 years old.
Â
"I was saddened to hear about the passing of Andrew Robinson," said former Mercer head coach Bobby Lamb. "Drew was a beautiful soul, a loving son, a loyal friend and a tremendous teammate. I have heard from so many of his teammates in the last 24 hours and I share my deepest condolences to his parents, family, friends and teammates. He will truly be missed."
Â
A native of Birmingham, Ala., and a product of Ramsay High School, Robinson played in 20 games (13 starts) for the Bears from 2017-19 and was a key cog of a Mercer offensive unit that boasted the nation's fourth-ranked red zone offense in 2018. Robinson started each of the first five games of the 2018 campaign before suffering a season-ending injury, and then started in each of the first eight games of the 2019 season as well.
Â
A member of the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll during his time as a student-athlete, Robinson earned a bachelor's of business administration from Mercer in 2021, and completed his MBA at MU in 2022.
Â
"On behalf of the entire Mercer University community, our thoughts and prayers go out to Drew's family, friends and teammates as they mourn the loss of one of the most infectious personalities that has ever stepped foot on this campus," said Mercer Director of Athletics Jim Cole. "He had a smile that would completely light up a room, and I know that he was loved and admired by each one of his coaches and teammates."
Â
Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
"Drew was a special friend and teammate," said former Mercer wide receiver Marquise Irvin (2015-18) and defensive back Eric Jackson (2016-19). "He would be the first to congratulate you on a job well done, and the first to tell you when you needed to get it together. That would be the consensus answer if you asked all of our teammates what made him so great! His smile was infectious, and he kept everyone around him laughing. Drew was loved by many and he will be missed. To our friend, our brother, our teammate - thank you for blessing us with your presence! Fly high, 55!"
