FORSYTH, Ga. - Mercer sits in second place with three players, plus an individual in the top 10 through the first two rounds at the Mercer Invitational from River Forest Golf Club.
As a team, the Bears had a solid day on Monday with a first round of 1-under, 287 followed by a second round of with a 3-over, 291 for a total of 2-over, 578. Mercer enters the final round in the 12-team field on Tuesday, just three shots back of 36-hole leader Jacksonville who is at 1-under, 575.
Katie Scheck and Eujin Pyon each carded rounds of par or better on Monday. Scheck carded rounds of 1-under, 71 and 2-under, 70 to put herself in fifth place. Scheck was excellent on the par 4's on Monday, going 5-under par on them, three strokes better than the next closest player.
Pyon - playing as an individual - carded a first round of 72 (E) followed by a second round of 1-under, 71. She is tied for seventh place at 1-under par for the tournament. Pyon leads the field with 29 pars over her 36 holes on Monday. The 36-hole leader in the clubhouse is Jacksonville's Susana Olivares who is 5-under, 139 for the tournament.
Mercer was the only team in the field to play the par 5's under par on Monday as the Bears took advantage of them going 4-under on the day. Mercer's 29 birdies through 36 holes are second most to Samford's 30 birdies.
The final round begins on Tuesday morning as a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m.
