MACON – An idle week was not enough to deter undefeated Mercer from absorbing a bit more national attention as the Bears marched into their spot among the nation's top teams in both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) FCS Coaches Poll and the Stats Perform FCS Top 25.
Â
Sporting the best start in the 50-plus seasons of the program, Mercer (5-0, 3-0 SoCon) jumped up four spots to No. 7 in the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll, while crawling up three spots to No. 8 in the Stats Perform listing that was released later Monday morning. The releases marked the first time in school history that the Orange & Black has been celebrated among the nation's top 10 teams.
Â
The Bears were the highest-ranked of four SoCon teams mentioned in either poll on Monday. Chattanooga (2-3, 1-1) re-entered the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 in the No. 23 position, while raking in votes for consideration in the AFCA Coaches Top 25. Western Carolina and East Tennessee State were included in others receiving votes in both publications.
Â
Mercer is back at home again on Saturday when the Bears suit up to take on Ivy League rival Princeton (1-2) in a 3:30 p.m. contest at Five Star Stadium. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by visiting MercerBears.com/Tickets.
