MACON – The dam began to give on postseason recognitions for the nationally-ranked Mercer football team on Monday at high noon when first-year head coach Mike Jacobs was named one of 15 finalists for the 2024 Eddie Robinson Award which is presented annually to the national coach of the year in Division I FCS college football.
Â
The award, first presented in 1987 and in its 38th season, is named for legendary Grambling State coach Eddie Robinson. All 13 FCS leagues are represented by an Eddie Robinson Award finalist. The winner, to be selected by a national voting panel, will be announced on Dec. 5 and honored at the Stats Perform FCS National Awards Banquet on Jan. 4 in Frisco, Texas.
Â
Jacobs, who was named the program's 21st head coach on January 18, has led the Bears to a magical season that was accentuated on Sunday afternoon when Mercer was awarded the No. 7 national seed, as well as a first-round bye, for the NCAA FCS Playoffs which begin on Saturday at campus sites around the nation.
Â
The fourth-winningest active coach in all of Division I football (minimum five seasons as collegiate coach), Jacobs has skippered the Orange & Black to a school record-tying 10 wins this season, as well as the program's first conference championship in 92 years. The Bears, who registered a perfect 6-0 record at Five Star Stadium this season – the first perfect home campaign since 2013 – will ride a school record-tying 9-game home win streak.
Â
Mercer (10-2, 7-1 SoCon) will begin its road in the NCAA postseason on December 7 when the Bears suit up to take on either 10th-seeded Rhode Island (10-2) or Central Connecticut State (7-5) in the second round of the NCAA FCS Playoffs. Kickoff has been scheduled for 2 p.m. at Five Star Stadium.
