
Bears Lead After First Round At Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational

Dubnik and Järvelä tied for third
GREENSBORO, Ga. - After the first round at the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational from Great Waters Golf Course, the Mercer women's golf team leads the 14-team field by two strokes. The Bears shot a 6-over 294 on Friday and hold a two stroke lead over Delaware heading into the second round on Saturday.
Mikayla Dubnik and Camilla Järvelä started their tournaments by shooting even par, 72 in their first round. The two sit in a tie for third place in the 81 player field after the first round.
"Love this golf course!," said Mercer head coach Michele Drinkard. "Great Waters challenges you on every hole and you need to maintain the intensity of your focus to play well. Pleased with the way the team handled themselves and the wind today. Loved their focus and the grit that they showed today as well. Every day is a new challenge and now our focus needs to turn to the second round."
Katie Scheck and Eujin Pyon had first rounds of 3-over, 75 and are tied for 15th place. The Bears took advantage of the par 5s on Friday, playing them a tournament best 6-under for the day. Järvelä, Dubnik and Ella Mäki-Tanila were all 2-under on the par 5s, tied for second best in the field. Järvela leads the field with 15 pars over her first 18 holes. Mercer had 12 birdies in the first round, tied for the second most.
The second round on Saturday has been moved up one hour from its previously scheduled start time. The round will now begin at 9 a.m. ET from holes No. 1 and 10. Mäki-Tanila will be the first Mercer golfer to tee off for the Bears at 10:40 a.m. from hole No. 1.
