
Mercer Holds Off Monmouth To Secure Two-Run Win

MACONÂ --Â Mercer (5-1, 0-0) got contributions from every part of its lineup as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Bears put nine runs on the board and knock off the Monmouth Hawks (1-5, 0-0) 9-7 on Saturday.
Senior Wesley Franklin (2-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Mercer. The right-hander went 1.1 shutout innings while giving up one hit. Graham Yntema is credited with the save.
In the batter's box, the Bears were led by junior Bradley Frye, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Senior Antonio Brown put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Junior Parker Lester put together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears trailed 2-0 at their first at-bat but put runs on the board in the second inning. Senior Alex Ramirez's run-scoring single highlighted a two-run inning for Mercer.
The score stayed at 2-2 until the very next inning, when the Bears the Mercer offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Parker Lester, which brought the Bears lead to 6-2.
Monmouth narrowed Mercer's lead to 6-3 before the Bears stretched the advantage to 8-3 in the seventh inning. The Bears added two to their tally on Bradley Frye's two-run homer to left.
The Hawks fought back, closing the gap to 8-5 until Mercer added some insurance in the eighth. The Bears scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Brown, bringing the score to 9-5 in favor of Mercer. Monmouth put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Bears held on for the 9-7 win.
