Mercer Falls To Seton Hall Despite Eighth-Inning Lead

MACON -- The Mercer Bears (15-11, 1-2 SoCon) took a 6-3 lead into the eighth inning, but could not hang on and fell 9-7 to the Seton Hall Pirates (16-12, 0-0 Big East) on Saturday.
Junior Bryant Olson (0-1) came out of the bullpen for Mercer and took the loss. Senior Graham Yntema was a bright spot for the Bears, starting the ballgame and throwing four innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits, with two walks and three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears were trailing 1-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Junior Jackson Cherry drove in two runs for Mercer with a single that scored senior Carter Geier and senior Brandon Prince.
The Pirates then tied the ballgame at two before the Bears came back to reclaim their advantage in the fifth inning. The Mercer offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of sophomore Ty Dalley, which brought the Bears' lead to 6-2.
Mercer's lead had evaporated when the Pirates scored six runs in the eighth inning and the score turned into a 9-6 Seton Hall advantage. The Bears cut that deficit to 9-7 but were unable to get any closer.
