STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs in the fifth inning to fuel a 4-2 victory over Mercer in the front half of a series-opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at O'Brate Stadium.

Junior Colton Cosper (1-1) got the ball to start for Mercer (9-5) and took the loss. Freshman Lawson Cole was a bright spot for the Bears, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 2.2 shutout innings, allowing no hits.

Junior Jackson Cherry led the way offensively for the Bears, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and two RBI. Junior Bradley Frye compiled a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with a triple.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bears were trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. Cherry put Mercer on the board with a leadoff home run off senior Sam Garcia.

The Cowboys then scored three runs to retake their advantage heading into the seventh inning, when the Bears responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. Mercer scored once on a RBI single off the bat of Cherry, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Cowboys. The Bears were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
