MACON – The Mercer women's basketball team continued to build on to the foundation of its 2024-25 roster on Friday when junior college transfer Chelsy Bautista inked a National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and athletic career with the Bears.
Â
Bautista, a 6-3 forward hailing from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, comes to Mercer from Odessa College in west Texas where she raked in all-conference and all-region accolades after helping pace the Wranglers to a 30-5 clip and a spot in the NJCAA Elite Eight. She was also crowned with defensive player of the year honors by the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC).
Â
"Chelsy brings athleticism and versatility to the forward position that will impact both ends of the floor," said assistant coach Margaret Richards. "Her aggressiveness and intensity will be an immediate impact for us defensively, but Chelsy's length will be a great asset for us in dominating the glass. We are thrilled to add her to the Bears family and cannot wait for her to get to Macon!"
Â
Bautista played in all 35 games (31 starts) for the Wranglers last season and averaged 11.8 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 1.5 assists in nearly 26 minutes per game on the floor. She scored 10 or more points in 19 outings, including a sextet of 20+-point outings, and registered four double-double performances, including a 26-point, 15-rebound night against Frank Phillips College. A 55.2 percent shooter from the field, Bautista also produced five steals in seven contests, and tallied three or more assists eight times.
Â
Bautista played in 25 games (13 starts) as a freshman at Odessa and averaged 9.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.3 assists per game. She also canned 53.5 percent of her field goal attempts in just more than 16 minutes per game on the floor.Â
