MARICOPA, AZÂ -Â Tracy Rodriguez carded an opening round of 1-under, 71 and sits in a tie for 4th place at the National Golf Invitational from Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.
The Bears shot 15-over par, 303 in Friday's first round and are in seventh place in the 10-team field. UNCW leads the field as they finished the day 1-over, 289.
Rodriguez's round included three birdies including back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14. Katie Scheck had the second lowest round of the day for the Bears with a 4-over, 76. Camilla Järvelä had an eagle on the par 4, 14th.
Mercer finished the day as one of three teams to shoot unde par on the par 5's as the Bears were 2-under as a team on them. Scheck was 2-under on the par 5's which was tied for the best score to par on the par 5's on Friday. Meanwhile, Järvelä was 1-under on the par 3's which was tied for the best among all 50 players in the field.
The Bears will begin the second round Saturday as Mikayla Dubnik will be the first Mercer golfer off the tee at 7:30 a.m. on hole 10.
