PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Then-No. 23 ranked Mercer's big road win at then-No. 14 Chattanooga on Saturday evening in southeast Tennessee paid even more dividends on Monday morning when the Bears were dubbed the Stats Perform FCS National Team of the Week.
                            Â
"The Bears, off to a 3-0 start under first-year coach Mike Jacobs, won a huge SoCon opener while remaining the only non-Ivy League FCS team yet to trail in a game this season," the publication wrote. "They've held all three opponents to 29 or fewer rushing yards. Brayden Smith scored the game's only touchdown on a 9-yard run in the second quarter, and linebacker Isaac Dowling and cornerback TJ Moore finished with six tackles each."
Â
Mercer (3-0, 1-0 SoCon) limited Chattanooga (0-3, 0-1) to its fewest rushing yards in a game since 2017 when the Mocs mustered just seven yards on the ground in a 41-17 home setback to Furman. Saturday's triumph also snapped a two-game series skid for the Bears who have come away victorious on two of their last three trips to UTC's Finley Stadium.
Â
Saturday's contest also marked the 16th game in the 35-game-old series that has been decided by seven or fewer points.
Â
Mercer will return home on Saturday when it suits up to battle Southern Conference rival The Citadel (2-1, 0-0) in a Family Weekend contest at Five Star Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by visiting MercerBears.com/Tickets.
