MACON, Ga. - Mercer defender Sekou Agard and Bears goalkeeper Trevor McMullen have been named the Southern Conference men's soccer offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competitions from August 27-September 2.
Â
Agard, a senior from Snellville, Ga., scored the game-winning goal in Mercer's 1-0 victory over Jacksonville on Friday. The goal came in the 48th minute on a corner kick from Carlos Santamaria, who delivered a beautiful ball for Agard to bury in the top right corner. Agard has scored both of Mercer's goals this season, as he also found the back of the net in the Bears' season opener against UCF. The defender has been a mainstay in the Mercer lineup this season, playing all 360 minutes on the year.
Â
The accolade is the latest in a decorated career that includes All-SoCon First Team, SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Player and United Soccer Coaches All-Region Third Team honors a year ago. This marks the first time Agard has been named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week. He received SoCon Defensive Player of the Week honors on September 26, 2022.Â
Â
McMullen, a senior from Decatur, Ga., posted shutouts in both of Mercer's matches this week to move his clean sheet streak to three. McMullen made four saves in Thursday's 1-0 win over Jacksonville, including a clutch stop in the 81st minute to keep Mercer in front. On Sunday, he recorded three saves, all in the second half, to help the Bears to a 0-0 draw against North Florida. Sunday's clean sheet marked the 16th of his career. McMullen now has 10 saves on the year to just three goals allowed, good for a save percentage of .769. His 182 career saves are the most among active players in the Southern Conference.Â
Â
The 2024 campaign marks McMullen's fourth as Mercer's primary goalkeeper. The Defensive Player of the Week nod is the fourth of his career, as he earned the award once in 2021, 2022 and 2023. McMullen was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Month in September 2023 by allowing just four goals across eight matches, and was named to the SoCon All-Tournament Team at the end of the 2023 season after allowing only two goals in three tournament games to help the Bears to the title.Â
Â
Both McMullen and Agard were named to the SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team ahead of the 2024 season.Â
Â
The Bears will host Memphis at Betts Stadium on Thursday in the home opener. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
