SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A pair of braces by Junior Casillas and Fernando Arteaga powered the Mercer Bears (3-6-3, 1-0-1 SoCon) to a 5-4 win over conference rival Wofford (5-7-1, 1-1-0 SoCon) at Snyder Field on Saturday night.
The Bears broke the deadlock early when Ehi Aimiuwu scored his third goal of the season in the 14th minute. The junior forward now has six goals across his three seasons at Mercer.
Shortly after Mercer found the opening goal, Junior Casillas doubled the Bears' lead in the 20th minute. Fernando Arteaga extended the lead to three with his first goal of the season shortly after coming out of halftime.
The final 25 minutes put all of Snyder Field on their feet. Wofford found its first goal of the match at 65:16. Arteaga found his second goal, and Mercer's fourth, in the 74th minute.
The Terriers converted a penalty two minutes later to make the contest 4-2. Casillas netted his second of the match in the 79th minute. Wofford scored in the 85th and the 90th minute to cut the deficit to one.
Mercer's five goals are the most in a single match this season and a mark not reached since the Bears' 5-1 victory over VMI in 2023. Arteaga and Casillas became the first pair of Bears to record braces in the same match since Dylan Gaither and Michael Ille in 2021.
The Bears share the top of the SoCon standings with Furman at four points apiece. Mercer is back in action on Tuesday, October 14 at Betts Stadium against in-state rival Georgia Southern.
