MACON – The Mercer men's soccer team dropped its midweek contest with in-state rival Georgia Southern, 3-0, on Tuesday night at Betts Stadium.
The Mercer Bears (3-7-3, 1-0-1 SoCon) lost in front of their home fans for just the second time this season after falling to the ranked Eagles.Â
Georgia Southern (9-2-1, 2-2-0 SBC) opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a strike by Tomas Morales. Mercer would shut down the Eagles for the remainder of the half with Henry Hampshaw making two saves to keep the deficit at one heading into the break. The Bears would concede twice more in the 54th and 64th minutes.
Mercer's lineup saw plenty of rotation as the Bears have reached the middle of conference play. Both Lawson Cummins and Stephen O'Hearn made their first appearances of the season, coming in and logging 16 minutes to end the match.Â
Ethan Manzella and Ethan Buffone served as key pieces to the Bears' side in Tuesday night's match. The pair of freshmen made their first appearances since September 20. Manzella logged 63 minutes and led Mercer with two shots while Buffone finished as the only Bear to play all 90.
Timi Awe made his first appearance since September 27 while Flint Haligas saw the field for the second time this season. The sophomore midfielder has not appeared for Mercer since the Bears' season opener against Oglethorpe on August 21.
The Bears embark on a trip to Johnson City, Tennesse for a road clash with conference foe East Tennessee State this Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
