Saturday Night Matinee
Saturday night's contest between Mercer and Wofford quickly became a candidate for Match of the Year. The Bears scored first with Ehi Aimiuwu bagging his third goal of the season. Junior Casillas doubled Mercer's lead about six minutes later and the Bears went into the break with a 2-0 lead.
Shortly after half, Fernando Arteaga found nylon for the first time this season. Wofford's Kalle Rahbeck made it 3-1 before Arteaga secured his first brace in 1,144 days to give the Bears a three-point advantage.
Nathan Simes converted a penalty to cut Mercer's lead to two before Casillas recorded his first brace as a Bear to make it 5-2 at the 78:36 mark. The Terriers brought the fans at Snyder Field to their field with two late goals before ultimately falling short, 5-4.
Arteaga and Casillas became the first pair of Bears to record a brace in the same match since Dylan Gaither and Michael Ille in 2021.
Flying with the Eagles
Georgia Southern enters this contest on a two-game skid with a 2-0 loss to then No. 8 West Virginia and a 3-0 loss to UCF. The Eagles bolster an 8-2-1 record, remaining undefeated through their first nine matches.
The Eagles are ranked in two of the three major polls, with the highest being No. 18 in TopDrawerSoccer.com's Week 9 poll. College Soccer News has Georgia Southern as the 24th best team in the country. Georgia Southern is also currently No. 26 in RPI.
Ricky Louis is Georgia Southern's leading goalscorer. The sophomore forward has bagged six goals across his 10 starts. Junior forward Ryan Holmes follows behind with three and freshman midfielder Emil Seedorff is the only other multi-goal scorer in Statesboro with two.
Senior goalkeeper Nate Martinez has been phenomenal to begin the season. The multi-year starter has maintained a 0.82 goals against average along with five clean sheets to begin the year.
Mercer is 12-1-1 since 2008 when playing Georgia Southern. The Bears' sole loss came in 2016. The only time the two programs split the result was the last time the in-state rivals faced off in Statesboro in 2023.
