MACON – The opening round of the main draw in both singles and doubles competition was in the spotlight on Tuesday at the 2025 Mercer Tennis Classic, and upsets were on the menu once again.
Â
Anna Rogers ousted third-seeded Louisa Chirico in three sets to highlight singles action, while Ayana Akli and Eryn Cayetano teamed up to the eliminate fourth-seeded tandem of Alicia Herrero and Dalayna Hewitt in straight sets. That was Tuesday's only matchup that featured a seeded doubles team.
Â
Second-seeded Djara Vidmanova and eighth-seeded Olivia Gadecki both advanced in singles play. The first two sets of Gadecki's tilt were both decided by tiebreakers before Gadecki put the match away with a 6-3 triumph in the deciding third set. Vidmanova, a former singles and doubles national champion at Georgia, was down 3-2 in her opening set with Olivia Lincer, but still won in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-0.
Â
Four matches featuring tournament seeds will be the topic of the day on Wednesday at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center in north Macon, including top-seeded Renata Zarazua's opener against Merna Refaat. The top seed in the doubles main draw – Maria Kozyreva and Iryna Shymanovich – will be in action as part of the late-afternoon schedule.
Â
Wednesday's competition will be highlighted by the 7 p.m. center court doubles matchup between Americans Jessica Failla/Anna Rogers and Russians Anastasia Gasanova/Yuliya Hatouka.
Â
The Mercer Tennis Classic, in partnership with the Macon Area Tennis Association and Macon-Bibb County, will run through Sunday, with all matches taking place at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center.
