SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A perfect kicking day in a 49-47 shootout at Southern Conference foe Western Carolina, including a go-ahead field goal with 90 seconds left, was rewarded handsomely on Monday afternoon when Reice Griffith picked up his third SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week honor, the league announced.
Â
Griffith, a junior from Pace, Fla., scored 11 points on a 5-for-5 PAT showing, as well as a 2-for-2 clip on field goal attempts, to help the Bears clinch at least a share of the SoCon regular season title. He scored the final points of the opening half with a 24-yard field goal in the second quarter, and connected on the eventual game-winning 3-pointer from 37 yards away in the final period.
Â
He also handled the kickoff specialist duties for the Bears, averaging 63.2 yards on nine attempts, including four that resulted in touchback.
Â
The program's all-time scoring leader, Griffith has amassed 251 points across 2-plus seasons in the Orange & Black, including a 134-for-134 showing on point-after attempts. He also holds the program's all-time record for field goals made (39).
Â
The 8th-ranked Bears (8-1, 7-0 SoCon) will be back in action again on Saturday when they battle league nemesis Chattanooga (5-5, 4-2) in a 3 p.m. Homecoming contest at Five Star Stadium. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by visiting MercerBears.com/Tickets.
