MACON – Sporting its best start to a regular season in six years, the Mercer Beach Volleyball team will continue a season-opening 14-game stretch away from home this weekend when the Bears trek to Jacksonville, Fla., for the North Florida-hosted Duuuval Duals.
The Orange & Black (3-1) is scheduled for a quartet of matchups over the 2-day event, beginning with a Friday morning outing against the host and unbeaten Ospreys (4-0). Mercer will tangle with Chattanooga (0-0) to close out Friday action in northeast Florida, and will close out its portion of round-robin tournament play on Saturday against Jacksonville (0-4) and Saint Leo (1-1).
Mercer dropped a tough one to then-No. 20 Stetson open up the season last weekend at the Stetson Spring Fling in DeLand, Fla., but rebounded with three-straight triumphs, including a 3-2 win over Nebraska at Cooper Beach. The Bears also posted routs of Eckerd and Stephen F. Austin in central Florida.
Mercer's Nos. 4 and 5 pairs keyed the hot start last weekend with 3-1 weekend performances. MU's No. 5 tandem of Reese Hood and Grace Rathburn rallied back from opening-set losses to pick up wins against both Eckerd and Stephen F. Austin, while also winning convincingly against Nebraska's pair.
The No. 4 tandem of Kathryn Corbett and Nicole O'Mara kickstarted their weekend with a three-set thriller against Eckerd, followed with a straight-sets win against the Cornhuskers and closed out the weekend with a dominant victory against Stephen F. Austin's pair.
Following this weekend's action in Jacksonville, the Bears will pack up their show and head west for six games in Southern California.
