
Bears In Third Place After Strong Day One Showing At FAU Paradise Invitational

Katie Scheck in tie for 8th place
BOCA RATON, Fla. - Katie Scheck carded a career best, bogey-free first round of 5-under, 67 and sits in a tie for eighth place with Mercer as a team in third place after the first two rounds of the FAU Paradise Invitational from Osprey Point Golf Course in Boca Raton, Florida.
As a team, the Bears had a solid day on Monday, with a first round of 5-under, 283, and a second round of 1-under, 287. That puts the Bears at 6-under, 570 and in third place in the 15-team field with Mercer trailing two top 50 teams in the country in No. 44 Oklahoma (22-under par) and No. 21 Oklahoma State (20-under par).
Mercer sits ahead on the leaderboard of two other top 50 teams in the country in No. 34 Kentucky who is one shot back of the Bears at 5-under par and No. 46 BYU who is four shots back of Mercer and in a tie for eighth place.
All five Mercer golfers carded at least one round of par or better on the day with each golfer in the top 30 on the leaderboard in the 78-player field.
Scheck had an outstanding first round, shooting a career low of 5-under, 67 without a bogey on her scorecard. Her second round of 1-over, 73 puts her in a tie for eighth place and just four shots back of the leader heading into the final round on Tuesday.
Emilia Väistö had two strong rounds of 1-under, 71 on the day to put her in a tie for 15th place. Väistö and Scheck have been excellent on the par 3's as Scheck is 2-under on them which is tied for second best in the field and Väistö is 1-under on them which is tied for sixth best in the field.Â
As a team Mercer went 1-under par on the par 3's which was second best in the field and the Bears were one of just three teams along with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to go under par on the par 4's as Mercer went 5-under par on them. Mercer's 34 birdies on the day were third most in the field as well.
The final round begins Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. ET via a shotgun start.
