MACON – Athletics department officials at Mercer University announced Thursday morning that football head coach Mike Jacobs has re-signed a contract that will keep the reigning Southern Conference Coach of the Year in Middle Georgia through the end of the 2029 season. Details of the contract were not disclosed.

"My family and I are extremely appreciative of both the support and the unmatched commitment that the University has shown to us and this football program over the last 14 months," Jacobs said. "Middle Georgia is our home, and my commitment to Mercer is unwavering. I can't thank (Mercer President) Bill Underwood and (Mercer Athletics Director) Jim Cole enough for their belief in our staff to continue to build on the successes of this program."
Â
A 22-year collegiate coaching veteran, Jacobs was named the program's 21st head coach on Jan. 18, 2024, and led the Bears to a program-best 11 victories during the fall on the way to the Southern Conference championship – Mercer's first league title in the 51-year history of its program – and an appearance in the quarterfinals round of the NCAA FCS Playoffs. MU sent a SoCon-best 13 players to the All-SoCon squads, while also raking in SoCon Offensive Player (Dwayne McGee), Defensive Player (Brayden Manley) and Freshman (Andrew Zock) of the Year laurels as well.

Five student-athletes picked up all-America laurels from Stats Perform FCS, including senior TJ Moore who finished as runner-up in the voting for the Buck Buchanan Award which is given to the FCS's national defensive player of the year, while Riley Adcock picked up prestigious CSC Academic All-America laurels. Jacobs was also named one of 15 finalists for the 2024 Eddie Robinson Award which is presented annually to the national coach of the year in Division I FCS college football. R
Â
"Coach Jacobs has done an impeccable job leading our football team, and I could not be prouder of the program and what he has done to create a championship culture in every aspect," Cole said. "Not only did he help bring Mercer its first conference championship in school history, but his student-athletes have also shown a focus on being successful in the classroom and throughout the community as well. Mike and his family are incredible people, and we are extremely blessed to have them around for many years to come."
