ATLANTA – No. 25 Georgia Tech used an eight-run first inning to jump out to a big lead and did not look back, downing Mercer by a score of 21-5 on Tuesday night.
Titan Kamaka (1-for-4) and Eli Stephens (1-for-2) homered to lead the Bears at the plate. Wyatt Mummert (0-1) got the loss, while Sam Swygert (1-1) took the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Georgia Tech pounced on the Bears in the first inning, using three hits, three walks and an error to jump out to an 8-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets continued to add to their lead in the following frames, scoring a run in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings to build a 12-0 lead.
Mercer was able to get on the scoreboard in the sixth, with Titan Kamaka getting the scoring started with a solo home run to left field, his fourth of the season. Later in the inning, the Bears used two HBPs and a walk to load the bases. Ely Brown stepped up next and beat out an infield single to force a bad throw, allowing two runs to score.
However, Georgia Tech answered with another huge inning, scoring nine runs on six hits to run the score to 21-3. In the top of the seventh, Eli Stephens collected his first collegiate hit in a big way, launching a long ball out to right center for a two-run homer. Following the home run, the Yellow Jackets were able to collect three outs to clinch the 21-5 run-rule win.
