CHARLESTON, S.C. – Mercer pitching limited Charleston Southern to three hits to take game three of the series by a score of 4-3 on Sunday at CSU Ballpark.
Ely Brown (2-for-4) doubled twice and scored two runs, while Brant Baughcum (2-for-5) and Titan Kamaka (2-for-4) had multi-hit efforts to lead the Bears at the plate. Jess Ackerman (4-2) was excellent, tossing a career-high seven innings with five strikeouts to pick up the win for Mercer before giving way to Andrew Garnett, who recorded the final six outs to pick up his first save of the season. Tait Robertson (1-4) took the loss for Charleston Southern.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first inning, Mercer took an early lead on a leadoff double from Brown and a sacrifice fly by Ty Dalley, making the score 1-0. The Bucs quickly responded in the home half with a sacrifice fly of their own to equalize the score at 1–1.
Mercer pushed back ahead in the second inning, scoring two runs. Parker Lester again started the inning with a double before coming around to score on a single from Zack Thompson. With one out in the inning, Eli Stephens lifted a sac fly to left to score Drew Johnson, giving the Bears a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Charleston Southern answered with two runs, evening things back up at three apiece. However, Mercer responded right back in the fifth inning, as another double from Brown and an RBI single from Baughcum made the score 4-3.
From that point on, Mercer pitching held strong to keep the Bucs off the board. Ackerman came up big in the fifth, stranding runners at second and third, before mowing down the Bucs in the sixth and seventh to finish his day.
Entering from the bullpen to start the eighth inning, Garnett made a clutch pitch of his own to strand a runner at third and preserve the lead. Looking to secure the save, Garnett went back out for the ninth and struck out two Bucs, working a 1-2-3 inning to end it.
