MACON – In what was a 2-1 game heading into the seventh inning, the Samford Bulldogs scored 12 runs over the game's final three innings to take Saturday's regular season finale over Mercer by a score of 14-3. Mercer finishes the regular season with a 12-9 record in SoCon play and will be the number four seed in next week's SoCon Tournament in Greenville, S.C., playing the winner of fifth-seeded Western Carolina and eighth-seeded VMI on Thursday, May 22 at 3 p.m.

Ely Brown (3-for-5) had his third multi-hit game of the weekend and drove in a run to lead the Bears at the plate. Mason Blasche (9-0) got the win for Samford, while Jackson Gaspard (1-1) took the loss for Mercer.

HOW IT HAPPENED

It was a pitcher's duel early in the game, with Gaspard and Blasche trading zeroes through the first two and a half innings of play. The Bears struck first in the bottom of the third, as Brown singled home Eli Stephens to give Mercer a 1-0 lead.

Gaspard posted his fourth consecutive zero in the following half inning, getting help from his infield as the Bears turned a 4-6-3 double play for the second inning in a row. However, the Bulldogs finally got to Gaspard in the fifth, using a two-run home run to take a 2-1 lead.

Samford broke things open in the seventh inning, scoring five runs on four hits to grab a 7-1 advantage. Mercer battled back in the bottom of the inning, starting with Ty Dalley and Titan Kamaka trading places with a pair of doubles to score a run. After a single from Parker Lester, Zack Thompson lifted a sac fly to center to score Kamaka and make it 7-3.

Despite Mercer chipping away, the Samford offense kept the pedal to the metal in the eighth, scoring three more runs for a 10-3 lead. After the Bears left the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, Samford put it away in the top of the ninth with four runs and would end up taking the series finale by a score of 14-3.

Mercer finishes the regular season with a 33-23 record, including 21 wins at OrthoGeorgia Park. With wins on Thursday and Friday, the Bears earned a bye to the double elimination portion of next week's SoCon Tournament bracket as the fourth seed.
