MACON – Mercer football head coach Mike Jacobs welcomed more than 100 student-athletes back to Five Star Stadium on Monday morning as the defending Southern Conference champions officially lifted the lid on their preseason practice schedule.
Â
All 101 rostered players reported to the Homer and Ruth Drake Field House on Sunday morning for equipment fitting and physicals, while the evening was highlighted by a team dinner and first official team meeting. The 2025 roster is highlighted by 48 returning letterwinners, including a dozen starters, as well as more than 40 newcomers to the program.
Â
With the Bears donning only helmets as part of the NCAA-mandated acclimatization period, Jacobs walked away pleased with the opening day of camp on Monday, with the focus centered on the day-to-day improvement heading into the Week 0 matchup with fourth-ranked UC Davis at the historic Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Ala.
Â
"I was excited to see the energy that we brought to the field today," Jacobs said. "We have some things to work on and clean up ahead of the opener with UC Davis, but I was encouraged by the effort and enthusiasm that our guys came out with today."
Â
The Bears will continue with practices in helmets or shells (helmets/shoulder pads) through Friday before donning full pads for the first time in Saturday's 8:30 a.m. session. The Orange & Black will get the day off from the practice field on Sunday.
Â
Reserved-seat season tickets for the 2025 home football schedule have already gone on sale and can be purchased for as little as $75 by visiting MercerBears.com/Tickets. Access to game day parking in the BEAR PLUS lots will continue to be based on giving levels to the Mercer Athletic Foundation.
