MACON – Mercer football head coach Mike Jacobs walked away pleased by the 10th-ranked Mercer football team's first preseason practice session in full pads, calling it a true "give and take" morning at Five Star Stadium.
Â
"I really like the way this team works. I really like their competitive nature," Jacobs said. "There was some good give and take on both sides of the football. I thought that we were physical as heck today in our first day in full pads."
Â
Jacobs continued to laud the progression of the young players as the Bears approach their Week 0 matchup with 4th-ranked UC Davis on August 23 in Montgomery, Ala. He also gave high praise to both Mercer's strength and conditioning and athletic training staffs for their efforts in preparing the student-athletes for the grit that comes with preseason drills.
Â
"I think that we are in pretty good shape right now, and you're seeing it in this day-to-day heat," Jacobs said. "I give a lot of credit to our athletics department and our administration in allowing us to have our guys back almost all summer."
Mercer will take Sunday off from the practice field, but will be back at it again on Monday at 8:30 a.m.
Â
The Bears will lift the lid on their 51st season of intercollegiate football on August 23 when they trek to Montgomery, Ala., to take on 4th-ranked UC Davis in the FCS Kickoff. Mercer will open the home portion of its 2025 slate the following week (August 30) when it welcomes Presbyterian to Five Star Stadium for a 6 p.m. matchup.
Reserved-seat season tickets for the 2025 home football schedule have already gone on sale and can be purchased for as little as $75 by visiting MercerBears.com/Tickets.
