Goggins Picks Up SoCon Defensive Player Of The Week Honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A lockdown performance in the secondary that included a key touchdown right before the half put sophomore Cameron Goggins in the limelight again on Monday afternoon when he was named as the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Goggins, a senior from Hampton, picked off an Eric Rodriguez pass and returned in 38 yards for a touchdown right before the half as Mercer knocked off East Texas A&M, 23-15, in the FCS Kickoff on Saturday at Five Star Stadium. He also added a trio of tackles, including a pair of solo stops.

A former standout at both Georgia Military College (2023) and Florida Atlantic (2024-25), Goggins saw action in his 23rd collegiate game on Saturday in Macon.

The 15th-ranked Bears (1-0) will continue a season-opening 3-game home stand on Saturday when they suit up to battle Pioneer League rival Presbyterian (1-0) at Five Star Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by visiting MercerBears.com/Tickets.
