Doug Cowden began his second stint as Mercer’s pep band director in 2011-12. Cowden also headed up MU’s program in 2006-10 and – after taking a year off in 2010-11 – has returned to build the Bears’ pep bands into one of the finest around.
The native of Powder Springs, Georgia has an extensive music background, both as a performer and director. From 1994-96, he performed with the UT-Chattanooga Marching Band and, in 1997, was honored to perform with the seven-time world champion Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps out of Rosemont, Illinois.
From 1997 through the present, Cowden has instructed at many Atlanta-area and middle Georgia high schools. Among his experience are stints at McEachern, South Gwinnett, Shiloh, The Wesleyan School, Central (Macon) and Pres. Crisp County.
In 2001, Cowden instructed with the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps. He has also been privileged to have studied under some of the country’s foremost music instructors, including Anthony J. D'Andrea, Peter Temko, Tim Salzman, Tim Warner, Jeff Fiedler, Freddy Martin and Ken Bodiford.
Cowden is a 1994 graduate of McEachern High School. After attending UTC, he eventually earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Kennesaw State University in 2004.
Cowden is the son of OraMae Cowden and the late Douglas Cowden.
