Kenny Baker begins his second season as defensive line coach at Mercer University in 2015.
Baker oversaw a young defensive line in 2014, a group that helped the Bears lead the conference in turnover margin thanks to 24 forced turnovers, thanks to 13 interceptions and 11 fumble recoveries. Mercer finished fourth in the league in scoring defense (24.1) and total defense (379.9), while posting two shutouts.
He mentored Southern Conference All-Freshman Team selection Austin Barrett, while assisting with the development of All-SoCon picks Alex Avant and Tyler Ward and All-Freshman Team honoree Kyle Williams.
Baker came to Mercer after spending the 2013 as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Berry College during the Vikings’ inaugural campaign. At Berry, Baker helped guide true freshman linebacker Anthony Batey to Second Team All-Southern Athletic Association honors.
Prior to his time at Berry, he served as the defensive coordinator at Augusta’s Lakeside High School after spending a season as a student assistant at his alma mater, Gardner-Webb.
A four-year letterwinner at Gardner-Webb, Baker was a three-year starter on the defensive line. He was selected as a team capatain in 2007, while also garnering the team’s defensive player of the year honors. An honor student with the Bulldogs, he was a regular member of the Dean’s List and the Big South Honor Roll.
The Cartersville, Ga., native graduated from GWU with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education in 2009.
