A six-year coaching veteran, including four seasons across stops at three different collegiate institutions, Barry Brown begins his second stint at Mercer in 2026-27, as well as his fourth year alongside head coach Joel Taylor, as the tight ends coach for the Bears. Brown, who spent the previous two seasons in the same role at West Georgia, was a part of former Mercer head coach Drew Cronic’s staff in 2023.
Brown’s position group was integral to the myriad of success enjoyed by the West Georgia offense during the 2024 and 2025 campaigns. UWG’s tight ends logged 26 receptions for 291 yards and two scores across an 8-win campaign in the latter season, while also doing their part paving the way for a rushing attack that chewed up 167.0 yards per game, including a pair of 200+-rushing yard performances.
Brown spent the 2023 campaign as an offensive analyst in Macon as the Bears rattled off a 9-4 clip on the way to securing the program’s first berth into the FCS Playoffs. He played a key role in the development of both the offensive and special teams game plans for Mercer who averaged better than 24 points and 323 yards per game, while also boasting the nation’s 13th-ranked kickoff return defense.
Prior to trekking to Middle Georgia, Brown transitioned into the collegiate coaching world as a graduate assistant coach at Carson-Newman (Tenn.) in 2022 where he was charged with the development of the offensive line. The Eagles sported NCAA Division II’s 25th-best rushing offense (203.6 yards/game) on the way to tacking up six victories that season, including a trio of 300+-rushing yard outings. Carson-Newman also yielded less than 1-1/2 sacks an outing that season as well.
A native of nearby Dublin, Brown has also gained a wealth of coaching experience on the prep level in the Peach State as well. He began his coaching career as the golf coach at his prep alma mater, Dublin High School, while also diving into a dual role as the coach of both the wide receivers and kickers as the Fighting Irish rattled off 16 victories across the 2020 and 2021 seasons.Â
A three-year letterwinner at placekicker and punter for Georgia State from 2016-19, Brown earned four academic nods from the Sun Belt Conference. He finished his career with a handful of field goals and extra-points, and handled kickoff duties for the first eight games of the 2017 campaign where he also logged his lone career tackle – a stop of former Penn State all-American Saquon Barkley.
Brown earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science at Georgia State in 2020 and completed his graduate degree in education at Georgia College in 2022.
