Eddie Burns enters his first season as the graduateassistant coach of the Mercer baseball team. Burns was named to theposition on August 23, 2010.
"We are certainly happy and excited to add a kid of Eddie'scaliber to our program," head coach Craig Gibson said. "Between thecontacts he made during his career at Georgia Tech and inthe pros he will be a huge asset for our team in the future."
In addition to his day-to-day administrative responsibilities,Burns also helps supervise the team's academic progress andorganizes the team’s travel arrangements for road tripsduring the year.
On the field, Burns will work with the Bears pitching staff,both starters and relievers, as well as the team'scatchers.
Burns is no stranger to Mercer, having played against the Bearsmultiple times during a stellar four-year career at Georgia Tech.While at Georgia Tech, Burns was a member of the 2005 teamthat won an ACC Championship and the 2006 squad that went tothe College World Series. As a senior, Burns started 15 gamesas the No. 2 starter for the Ramblin Wreck, compiling a 7-5record with a 5.85 ERA. For his career, Burns finished with a 10-8record, a 5.22 ERA, and a very impressive 122-to-44strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Burns' performance at GT did not go unnoticed as he was draftedtwice during his collegiate career. The Atlanta Braves draftedBurns in the 16th round of the 2007 MLB Draft and the ClevelandIndians drafted him in the 39th round of the 2008 MLB Draft.
A native of Douglasville, Ga. native, Burns graduated fromGeorgia Tech in 2008 with a degree inmanagement.
