Tallahassee, Fla. – The final day of the Sunshine State
Classic got underway on Sunday and the Bears caught a red hot
Southern Miss team at the wrong time losing, 9-1 in five innings.
The Golden Eagles went undefeated on the weekend improving their
overall record to 4-0, (0-0 C-USA) as the Bears (1-2, 0-0 A-Sun)
lost to Southern Miss for a second consecutive game.
After both teams threatened in the first inning, the Bears would
get on the board first on their second go round at the plate.
Junior first baseman, Allison Jones singled to left on a 2-1 pitch,
and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior
outfielder Jenny Goodman.
Sophomore Stephanie Canara would pitch run for Jones and advanced
to third on a Southern Miss pastball. She would then score when
senior Stacey Condra singled to right field. That would be all the
offense Mercer would generate against Southern Miss pitcher,
Courtney Ramos (3-0). Ramos went five innings giving up just three
hits and one earned run. Mercer left five runners on base in the
loss as well.
Southern Miss stormed back and took the lead for good in the
bottom of the fourth on an RBI double from Logan James and a
two-run home run by Alexis Hurley to left. Then in the fifth the
golden eagles would add six more on runs to run-rule the Bears in
five.
The Bears had little time to let this one fester as they quickly
turned their attention to tournament host Florida State at 1:30
p.m.
