Tallahassee, Fla. – The Bears did not have long to let the
second consecutive loss to Southern Miss soak in on the final day
of the Sunshine State classic as Florida State loomed in the second
half of the double header. And just like the game last night
against Southern Miss the Bears (1-3, 0-0 A-Sun) would lose to
Florida State (3-1, 0-0 ACC) 2-1 in the bottom half of the
seventh.
Mercer took the lead in the top of the fifth on a sophomore
Sara Stukes single through the left side of the infield
with the bases loaded. Yet, that would be all the Bears could
muster leaving three stranded in the inning.
Then in the bottom half of the inning the Seminoles would answer
when Shayla Jackson drove a ball down the left field line past the
outstretched arms of senior Holly Oglesbee. The ball
trickled to the fence allowing Jackson to motor around the bases
and secure an inside the park home run to tie the ball game.
In the top of the seventh the Bears had a runner on third when
Seminole pitcher Sarah Hamilton was pulled after pitching six and
two-third innings. She was replaced by Terese Gober, who
subsequently got the final out of the inning via strikeout.
FSU's lead off batter Tiffany Brown lobbed a shot to right
center which was dropped by centerfielder Stacey Condra
allowing Brown to advance to third on the play with no outs. Later
in the inning, with the bases loaded, FSU's Robin Ahrberg
singled to center to score the game winning run.
The Bears stranded seven in the game.
