KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Mercer men's golf team posted scores of 298 and 292 in Monday's first and second rounds of the 2011 Invitational at the Ocean Course and are tied for sixth place after day one. Mercer's 36-hole score of 590 equaled Notre Dame's effort and has the Bears just six strokes back of the host school, the College of Charleston.
Florida was the only school to finish day one under par and leads the 12-team field with a day-one score of 567. The University of Alabama-Birmingham trails the Gators by 10 strokes while Maryland (580), South Florida (581) are in third and fourth place, respectively.
"The course played easier in the afternoon," Mercer head coach Steve Bradley said. "Any time you have a 36-hole day you get familiar with the golf course so the scores go down in the afternoon regardless."
Sophomore Hans Reimers shot 72-73 on Monday and is the highest Mercer player on the individual leaderboard, slotted in a tie for 11th place.
Sophomore James Beale shot 75 in the first round but improved upon that total by four strokes in the second round and is tied for 18th place overall. Beale's second-round 71 was Mercer's low round of the day.
In his collegiate debut, freshman Trey Rule carded back-to-back 74's and is tied for 24th place overall.
Senior Josh Cone and junior Thomas Holmes are two parts of a three-way tie for 50th place on the individual leaderboard. Cone and Holmes each used 154 strokes on Monday.
Junior Alex Street is tied for 53rd place overall after recording scores of 77 and 78.
"Overall fairly average for us and I think we expected to do a bit better," Bradley said. "I don't have any doubts that we'll play better tomorrow and have a chance to move up the leaderboard."
The final round of the 2011 Invitational the Ocean Course begins at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
