Men's Golf Ties for Eighth at the Brickyard Collegiate

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's golf team posted a 302 in Sunday's final round of the 2011 Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship, finishing the event in a tie for eighth place. Mercer's three-day total of 890 bested six other teams and marked the program's best finish in the five-year history of the event.
Georgia Tech won the team title, finishing 17 strokes under par (848) and outpacing the next closest team by 17 strokes. Florida State (865) took a second place finish and also fielded the individual champion, senior Brooks Koepka.
North Florida (868) took third place while Georgia and Virginia Tech tied for fifth place with scores of 881. Chattanooga (885) and Texas-Arlington finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Mercer's 890 equaled the effort of Oklahoma and helped the Bears finish in front of Mississippi (892), Colorado State (894), Augusta State (896), the College of Charleston (898), Gonzaga (912) and Air Force (914).
Sophomore Hans Reimers garnered Mercer's top individual finish, tying for 20th place with a three-day total of 219. Reimers' signed for a 77 on Sunday after shooting 73 and 69 in the first and second rounds.
Sophomore James Beale and junior Alex Street each took 74 swings on Sunday. Beale's tournament score came in at 222 and placed him in a tie for 36th place. Street wrapped up in the event with a score of 227 and tied for 56th.
Senior Josh Cone booked a 77 on Sunday and tied for 36th place overall with a score of 225. Junior Thomas Holmes fired a 78 on Sunday, bringing his tournament score to 235 and placing him in a tie for 72nd.
Sophomore Michael Hirthler competed as an individual, collecting scores of 77, 82 and 83 in three rounds of action. Hirthler tied for 79th place on the individual leaderboard.
Mercer returns to action in the Invitational at the Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C. That event marks Mercer's final competition of the fall and is scheduled for October 17-18.
