PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Freshman Hans Reimers fired a two-under 70 in the opening round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational to lead the Mercer men's golf team. After day one, the Bears sit in 13th place with a cumulative total of 294.
Mercer's 294 places the team just one stroke behind Mississippi for 12th place after day one. No. 13 Auburn and No. 38 TCU lead the field with scores of 282 (-6) on Sunday.
"We got off to a great start today," Mercer head coach Andrew Tredway said. "[Reimers] was -4 through 6 holes, so that was just a blazing start. The way the course was playing, low scores were definitely out there."
Reimers' first round 70 featured five birdies and placed the freshman tied for 12th place among the 85-golfer field.
Junior John Gregory Joseph shot 73 on Sunday and is tied with seven other competitors for 33rd place individually. Joseph's classmate, Josh Cone, posted a 75 and is tied for 49th place.
Freshman James Beale signed for a 76 in his first round of competition in Orange and Black. Beale's day one total slotted him tied for 61st place.
Sophomore Matt Kocolowski rounded out Mercer's participants with a 77 on Sunday and is tied for 68th place overall.
"We're still waiting for that one great round to get our confidence going," Tredway said. "We're so close and just need to make something good happen tomorrow."
Day two of the 2011 John Hayt Collegiate Invitational begins at 8 a.m. on Monday.
