New Mercer softball head coach James DeFeo is in the midst of his first fall exhibition season in Macon and as part of his first official duties this past Saturday announced the names of four players who represent the newly established Mercer Softball Leadership Council.
"I am very proud to announce this special group of players chosen by their teammates to represent the team with a voice," Mercer softball head coach James DeFeo said. The Mercer Bears Softball Leadership Council will work in conjunction with the coaching staff to ensure that the goals of the program are being fulfilled."
The Leadership Council is designed to give voice to each of the four classes on the team, while levying responsibility on each of the four individuals in the leadership positions. With the hope of building a proactive team dynamic, the Leadership Council will be responsible for providing feedback to the coaching staff while helping foster a competitive team environment.
As the team prepares for its next fall date this weekend, four players were selected by an internal vote of their teammates and representing each of the classes are: freshman, Chandler Padgett, sophomore McKenzie Woody, junior Heather Strange, and senior Sara Stukes.
"The Leadership Council's focus is to help the players take ownership of their program and to instill a sense of responsibility and accountability among the entire team," DeFeo said.
The Bears welcomes in a pair of teams this Saturday in Darton College and Truett-McConnell. The Bears play their first game of the day at 11 a.m. against Darton College and then finish up the afternoon with Truett-McConnell at 3 p.m.
