MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's soccer team received goals from juniors' Josh Shutter and Will Betts on its way to a 2-0 victory over Appalachian State on Sunday afternoon at Bear Field.
Mercer (1-1-1) out-shot Appalachian State 13-10, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal, and held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks as well.
The Bears jumped on the board first, in the 37th minute, when freshman Sean Baumann made a hard run in the box and was taken down by an Appalachian State defender to create a penalty kick opportunity. Junior Josh Shutter stepped up and converted the attempt to give the Orange and Black an early 1-0 lead.
That is the way things stayed moving into the second half until the Bears struck again in the 58th minute of play to put the game out of reach. Shutter slung in a long throw that junior Will Betts jumped up and flicked on past Mountaineers goalkeeper Danny Free to put the home team up by a 2-0 margin.
Freshman goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh made three saves in the match to notch his first collegiate shutout while Free made four saves for Appalachian State in the loss.
Mercer returns to the pitch when it travels to Atlanta to take on in-state rival Georgia State. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the GSU Soccer Complex.
