MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's soccer team dropped its game Thursday night to Furman, 2-0 from Betts Stadium in Macon.

Furman (12-3-3, 7-0-2 SoCon) entered the game leading the SoCon with 23 goals in conference play. The Bears (7-8-3, 2-5-2 SoCon) held the Paladins to just 10 shots and five on goal. Furman's 10 shots were its fourth fewest in a game all season. Mercer had 11 shots and five on goal. One big advantage the Bears had in the game was corner kicks. Mercer had eight corners to just one for the Paladins.

Most of the game was played in the middle third, with both teams struggling to put together dangerous chances in the attacking third throughout the night. After a fairly quite first 30 minutes, Furman scored its first goal of the game in the 31st minute when Alyssa England dribbled down the left wing, cut back near the end line and sent a cross into the box that was headed into the far right side of the goal by Riley O'Bryan for her seventh goal of the season, giving the Paladins a 1-0 lead.

Just over 12 minutes into the second half, Furman earned a free kick from over 30 yards out. Ellie Herrmann stepped up and decided to go for goal and placed a perfect shot that sailed over the head of Avery Parker and into the goal for Herrmann's first goal of the season and giving the Paladins a 2-0 lead.

Mercer did well to put pressure on Furman defensively for much of the remainder of the game, the Bears had numerous corner kicks and decent looks at goal in the run of play but Furman's defense and goalie Reese DeJong turned the Bears away and held on for a 2-0 win to remain tied for first place in the SoCon.
