HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Mercer baseball team just couldn't get anything going offensively in a 3-1 loss to High Point on Sunday afternoon at Williard Stadium.
Mercer (10-3) scored a season-low one run and tied its season-low with just six hits in the contest, while High Point (7-5) took advantage of some shaky Bears defense and quality starting pitching to pick up the win.
After Mercer starter David Randall and High Point hurler Jacob Newberry matched zeros on the scoreboard over the first three innings of play, the Panthers managed to push a run across in the bottom of the fourth. An RBI single by junior Devin Bujnovsky plated the first run of the game to give High Point a 1-0 lead.
High Point manufactured two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, when another Mercer error, its sixth of the weekend, and an RBI single by junior Willie Medina made the score 3-0 in favor of the home team.
The Bears tried to get back into it when sophomore Derrick Workman hit a solo home run in the eighth, but it wouldn't be enough in the end.
Newberry held the Orange and Black in check all day, going 7.1 innings and allowed just the one earned run on six hits and four strikeouts to pick up the win.
Randall took the tough luck loss for Mercer after going six innings and allowing just three runs, only two of which were earned, to go along with four strikeouts.
Mercer continues its eight-game road trip on Tuesday afternoon at Savannah State. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Grayson Stadium.
