MACON, Ga. – The Mercer softball team looks to break a season-long losing streak as it steps away from Atlantic Sun action to play a pair of non-conference games against South Alabama on Wednesday evening.
The Bears have dropped nine straight which tops a six-game losing streak the team suffered to begin the season. The latest swoon comes on the heels of the Bears starting out 5-2 in conference. Mercer now stands in unfamiliar position as one of four teams left out of the conference tournament. It is just the second time in the last six years MU will not play in the A-Sun Tournament.
The Bears will play the mid-week series against South Alabama to prep for its final doubleheader of the season, this Saturday at in-state rival Kennesaw St.
LAST TIME OUT
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer softball team dropped a pair of Atlantic Sun games to Lipscomb on Saturday, falling by scores of 8-2 and 5-2 at Sikes Field. The games marked the Bears' senior day event, as six seniors were recognized between games.
Lipscomb moved to 30-14 (8-6 A-Sun) with the wins while Mercer was eliminated from contention for an Atlantic Sun tournament berth and fell to 24-24 (5-11 A-Sun).
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
South Alabama took two of three against North Texas this past weekend in Sun Belt play and carry a 29-14 overall record. The Jaguars boast impressive wins over Florida St., Purdue and fellow A-Sun member Lipscomb this season. The Jaguars are led by Brittany Fowler who is batting .344 with five home runs and 30 RBI.
The South Alabama offense has been potent thus far outscoring their opponents 210-94. Sophomore Hannah Campbell has thrown a healthy majority of the innings inside the circle for South Alabama, a total of 153.2 innings in all. She carries a 17-9 overall record with 21 complete games and five shutouts. She has 164 strikeouts and limits opponents to a .237 average at the plate.
The Bears trail in the all-time series against the Panthers 0-2.
