Men's Golf Turns in Strong Day Two at Kiawah Invitational

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Powered by a freshman duo's strong performance, the Mercer men's golf team rose to 12th place at the Kiawah Invitational on Monday. Mercer's team total of 300 was better than 11 of the 14 other teams in Monday's play at The Ocean Course.
Mercer's two-day score of 619 is one stroke ahead of St. Johns and just four strokes behind both Texas State and Georgia Southern. Florida continues to lead the field with a 36-hole score of 577.
"Obviously it was nice to get better rounds out of Oliver and Jeffrey today," Mercer head coach Steve Bradley said. "The wind blows hard out here and if you don't have command of your golf ball, you'll pay for it. Overall today was a little better and that's encouraging. I'd like to see if we can play better tomorrow and get into the top-10."
Freshmen Oliver Vaidis and Jeffrey Heinicka each turned in 73's (+1) on the second day of competition to lead the way for Mercer. Heinicka jumped up to a tie for 32nd place overall while Vaidis moved into a tie for 44th place.
Sophomore Trey Rule enters Tuesday's final round as Mercer's top individual, tied for 27th overall with a two-day score of 153. Rule's 75 on Monday was a three-stroke improvement on his opening round effort.
Junior James Beale fired a 79 on Monday, while his classmate Hans Reimers posted an 82. Upon completion of their rounds, Reimers was tied for 59th overall while Beale was tied for 70th. Senior Thomas Holmes rounded out Mercer's competitors with an 83 and is tied for 81st overall.
Overall, Mercer's 300 on Monday was 19 strokes better than the team's Sunday score.
The third and final round of the Kiawah Invitational is scheduled to tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
