MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's soccer team got off to a great start, but some miscommunication and defensive breakdowns allowed Florida Gulf Coast to pull out a 3-1 win on Friday evening at Bear Field.
Mercer (8-6-2, 3-2-1 A-Sun) got off to a great start in the match courtesy of a goal by junior Washida Blackman in just the third minute of play. The Snellville, Ga. native collected a loose ball, dribbled in towards net and fired a shot from about 24 yards out that snuck in the upper left 90 of goal to give the home team an early 1-0 lead.
The goal for Blackman was her sixth of the season, which puts her in a tie for the fifth-most goals scored by a player in the Atlantic Sun Conference this season.
Just when it looked like Mercer was going into halftime with momentum and a 1-0 advantage, a defensive miscue allowed FGCU back into the match.
Bears goalkeeper Maggie Cropp came off her line to scoop up a long pass by the Eagles, but freshman Tabitha Tindell beat her to it and chipped up a shot from a tough angle into the open net to tie things up at 1-1 going into intermission.
The Eagles dictated play for the majority of the second half as well and recorded two more tallies thanks in large part to Mercer mistakes to come away with the 3-1 win.
Mercer returns to action on October 20 when it takes on Stetson. The game, which will double as Senior Day, starts at 1 p.m. at Bear Field.
