JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Mercer women's soccer team settled for a 0-0 tie against North Florida on Friday evening and in the process clinched a spot in the Atlantic Sun Championship for the eighth-straight season.
Mercer (9-6-3, 4-2-2 A-Sun) is now in fourth-place in the A-Sun Conference standings, but can finish anywhere from second-place to fifth-place depending on all the league results on Sunday.
Despite out-shooting the Ospreys 30-19, including a 12-8 edge in shots on goal, the Bears played to their second scoreless draw of the 2013 campaign.
Mercer nearly jumped out in front in the early moments of the contest, but a shot from junior Stephanie Giangiuli caromed off the crossbar and back into play to keep the score tied at 0-0.
The Bears best chance to break up the scoreless affair came at the very end of regulation when a header by junior Tess Patton off a corner kick clanked off the post and harmlessly out of play to end the contest in a 0-0 draw.
Sophomore Maggie Cropp got the start in goal for Mercer and recorded eight saves in the game to earn her third shutout of the season.
Mercer concludes its 2013 regular season when it takes on Jacksonville on October 27. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Southern Oak Stadium.
