PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Mercer sophomore Trey Rule fired a 1-under 71 to lead the men's golf team in the opening round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational on Sunday. Mercer's team score of 301 on Sunday places the team in a tie for 13th with two rounds to play.
Host North Florida shot 276 and leads second placed Duke by six strokes. UCF (286), LSU (290) and Coastal Carolina (291) round out the top five.
"Obviously I'm disappointed and didn't expect what happened today," Mercer head coach Steve Bradley said. "[James Beale] has been injured, so we didn't know what to expect out of him. [Trey Rule] played pretty solid and I'm happy for him, but we left a lot of shots out there."
After bogeying two of his first five holes, Rule shot 2-under on his final 15 holes to finish the day tied for 17th place individually. Junior Hans Reimers carded a 75 and is tied for 43rd, while senior John Gregory Joseph booked a 76 and is tied for 55th.
Senior Thomas Holmes used 79 strokes and is tied for 76th place while sophomore James Beale needed 82 swings and is tied for 84th.
"We've got two round left, so we hope to get a better and move up the leaderboard," Bradley said.
Round two of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational begins on Monday at 8 a.m.
